TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
In 2004 and 2005, the Moinhos de Vento Hospital invested in equipment that brought more accuracy, agility and comfort to surgeries and outpatient care.
The Siremobil, produced by Siemens Medical Solutions, also known as Arco ISSO-C 3D, is an isocentric fluoroscopy device capable of obtaining and performing image reconstruction, generating 3-D visualization to be used during the surgery period and at the end of surgeries in areas such as neurology, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology and other specialties that use fluoroscopy.
Vector Vision, supplied by BrainLab, is a virtual navigation system that integrates with Siremobil in the qualification of surgeries, especially cranium and spinal column ones.
Primus Linear Accelerator is a state-of-the-art radiotherapy device that allows doctors to protect non-damaged tissues and organs by irradiating the area of interest in a more homogeneous way. It includes radiosurgery resources and a system of microshapers, software for oncology treatment planning and a therapy supervision system.
Siemens Multislice Somation Sensation Cardiac Tomograph allows the visualization of coronary arteries without the use of a catheter, allowing a non-invasive exam.
Siemems Magnetom Avanto brings important innovations in terms of magnetic resonance, particularly reducing exam length and noise level, making diagnostic investigation more bearable for most of the patients. Progresses are also remarkable in terms of image quality and accuracy.
SERVICES
ONCOLOGY CENTER
The new Oncology Center is a reference project on health in South America. It includes over 100 doctors, oncologists and surgeons in a physical structure that comprises radiotherapy (basement), chemotherapy (ground floor) and consultation rooms (1st
floor), with a total area of 3,310 m2. Besides this, the Center has a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, dentists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, nurses, and a group specialized in the treatment of pain, which provide the patient with the best possible health care.
By concentrating human and technical resources in a single place, the Hospital allows the patients to enjoy total comfort and security during the therapy process.
The physical structure of the Oncology Center was conceived as a way of providing broad private spaces for the patients’ full comfort. There are 14 consulting rooms and 8 individual chemotherapy suites to assist up to 400 patients a month.
Dr. Sérgio Rothmann analyses the importance of the new Medical Center: “The Moinhos de Vento Hospital is already a reference for patients suffering from cancer. Now, with the new Oncology Center, we are organizing assistance under a multidisciplinary system, in which the treatment can be simultaneously planned by specialists from various areas”.
Procedures such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery are coupled with state-of-the-art technology, such as a piece of equipment that is still unique in Southern Brazil: the Primus Lineal Accelerator.
With this device, the Moinhos de Vento Hospital offers the IMRT technique - Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy –, which allows the application of a higher dose on the tumor itself and a lower one on the healthy tissues surrounding it, which represents less toxicity for the patient. Besides, the lineal accelerator will permit the conduction of radiosurgeries, an additional resource that provides radiotherapy with the necessary precision to irradiate tumors in the central nervous system in a more efficient manner. The hospital brought a foreign professional specifically trained in radiosurgery who is habilitating neurosurgeons to participate in this kind of training.

CARDIOLOGY CENTER
Brain-cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of death in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, and one of the most common in the country. The Moinhos de Vento Hospital, aware of this reality, has been offering, since 2002, its Cardiology Service to the community.
The area is headed by the cardiologist Dr. Jorge Pinto Ribeiro and is located on the 3rd floor of the Tiradentes Clinical Center. There, the activities related to this specialty are fully present, such as medical consultation rooms, non-invasive methods (electrocardiograms, exercise test, echocardiography), and the area of interventionist cardiology, with two rooms where catheterizations are carried out for diagnosis and therapy, besides a recovery room.
In the Cardiology Center, all cardiology areas are integrated within the same environment, ranging from general cardiology, heart surgery, electro physiology, interventionist cardiology to pediatric cardiology. Cinecoronariographies, for example, are also performed in the same space, which frees the patient from the need of hospitalization.
The service team comprises more than 30 cardiologists capable of carrying out 1,000 consultations per week. Every week, the group holds scientific meetings, alternating discussions on clinical cases with reviews of impact studies. The meetings are held every Thursday, from 7 to 8.30am, in the amphitheater of the Instituto de Educação e Pesquisa (IEP – Education and Research Institute). The meetings are open to the members of the clinic corps and assistance team members.

TRAUMATOLOGY AND ORTHOPEDIC SERVICE
The Traumatology and Orthopedic Service is a recent – and audacious – project of the Moinhos de Vento Hospital. Officially born three years ago, it has today, more than 50 othopedists and traumatologists, specialists in various subspecialties.
Its location on the fifth floor of the Tiradentes Clinical Center and the medical staff’s full formation are the two great novelties of the service for the next years. In 2005, the service will be completely established in the new facility.
The new Center will have consultation rooms, Plaster Room and Procedures Room – bandages, infiltrations, etc. – on the same floor. Besides, the Traumatological Emergency Room will be enlarged.
The Traumatology and Orthopedic Service has a group of high technical value and aims at becoming a reference in southern Brazil. With this purpose, the group has been holding monthly meetings for 2 years. An issue is raised by one of the subspecialties and, right after, the group works on cases. Occasionally, a visiting doctor approaches a subject in particular.
Among the state-of-the-art surgeries performed by the Traumatology and Orthopedic Service are the hip, fist, shoulder, articulation and foot arthroscopy surgeries.

Human Reproduction Center – GERAR
Today, infertility affects one couple in ten at global level, being acknowledged by the International Health Organization as a reproductive health disorder. However, for not being considered a disease, the psychological tensions produced by a frustration in the desire of generating children are frequently underestimated.
Self-image, self-esteem, sexuality, as well as social life and well being in general are very shaken in infertile couples. The feeling of failure, of not being good enough to have children as their parents – and many other couples – evokes unconscious anguishes and fantasies that cause disturbance, often leading the infertile couple to disagreements in its inter-relationship and to social isolation.
The Human Reproduction Center of the Moinhos de Vento Hospital, aware of the importance of rendering assistance to the emotional suffering of its patients, as well as of mitigating the effects of stress factors and the anxiety inherent to the assisted fertilization treatment itself, offers individual or couple psychological treatment, aiming at, simultaneously, successful results and the patients’ well-being.

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY ROOM
In June 2004, the Moinhos de Vento Hospital inaugurated its Pediatric Emergency Room, providing pediatric patients with special beds, clinics and a doctor on duty, who follows specific care protocols for pediatric emergency.
With the Pediatric Emergency Room, the Hospital closes the child-care circle. The pediatric patient is fully taken care of, during the 24 hours of the day. In addition to the advantages to the child, the Pediatric Emergency Room also offers improvements for the pediatrician. With its Emergency specialized service, the pediatrician has the tranquility of referring its patient to the Moinhos de Vento Hospital knowing that he/she will be informed about the whole situation.
Thus, the doctor on duty carries out the emergency procedures and, in case the patient is hospitalized, the pediatrician may come whenever he/she is available.
Whenever a child arrives, the parents are asked who the child’s pediatrician is, in order to give the latter a feedback, keeping the patient’s link with his/her doctor, for this is the Pediatric Emergency’s mission: to solve emergency situations and then refer the child back to his/her pediatrician. If the child is hospitalized, there is the possibility of the pediatrician taking over or passing him/her to a colleague from the Moinhos’ staff, returning the child later to the consultation room. Nurses and technicians from the Pediatric Emergency Room receive special training to work in this sector.
